Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA) and the Australian Medical Association (AMA) are pleased to invite you to our fifth annual joint webinar "Climate change and sustainability: leadership and action from Australian doctors."

The webinar features keynotes from leading professionals in the climate and health arena, including DEA's board chair Professor Nicholas Talley, AMA Vice President Julien Rait and Professor Carolyn Hullick from the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.
 
Attendees will also hear from Dr Kimberly Humphrey, DEA Board member and WHO ATACH Steering Group Representative – on behalf of Health Professional Associations, speaking to the international health response and providing an insight into COP. 

Dr Grant Silbert, Co Convenor of DEA's Medical Education Group will provide an update on how they are advancing embedding climate and sustainability into medical training at all levels with one of their key focuses being shaping the future of accreditation,

Each presentation will  outline their past and future activities in relation to climate change and sustainability. They will highlight the advocacy, training and practical initiatives that encourage and promote continual collaboration and leadership from Australia’s medical profession.

Our Speakers

Conjoint Professor Carolyn Hullick FACEM
is Chief Medical Officer at the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care and an Emergency Physician in Newcastle, New South Wales.

Carolyn is a senior Harkness Fellow having spent 12 months at Weill Cornell Medical School in New York, investigating care for older people in emergency departments. With this expertise in geriatric emergency medicine, she has developed a program to support acutely unwell residents in residential aged care facilities and has geriatric emergency medicine leadership roles with the Australasian College and the International Federation for Emergency Medicine.

Associate Professor Julian Rait is a specialist ophthalmologist and current Vice President of AMA.

Between 2018 and 2021 Julian was the President of AMA Victoria, and has been a fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors since 2007.

Julian has held several leadership positions within the medical indemnity insurance industry including serving on the Board of the Avant Foundation and the Avant National Advocacy Stakeholder Committee, while previously serving as a Board member and Chairman of the MDA National Group until 2014. On Australia Day 2018, Julian was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for "service to Ophthalmology and to the development of overseas aid”.

Distinguished Laureate Professor Nicholas J. Talley AC is a gastroenterologist and public health physician, researcher and educator.

Nick is a Past President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians where he became very active in advocating about the serious health impacts of climate change, and promoting adaptation and mitigation by the health system and the community. Nick continued this work when Editor-in-Chief of the Medical Journal of Australia from 2015 to 2023.

Nick is currently the Director of the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Digestive Health at the University of Newcastle, Australia and an NHMRC Leadership 3 Fellow. He currently serves on the NHMRC Council. He is a Senior Staff Specialist at the John Hunter Hospital and Distinguished Laureate Professor at the University of Newcastle.

He is the co-author of Talley and O’Connor’s Clinical Skills and Examination Medicine.
